31st Anniversary of John Lennon’s Death

Dec08

Those of us who passionately followed The Beatles in our youth likely also recall where we were when we got the news that John Lennon had been shot by Mark David Chapman in front of his home in New York City. Today – Thursday, December 8, 2011 – marks the 31st anniversary of the death of The Beatles founder and singer-songwriter. To commemorate this day in history, The Hollywood Reporter comprised a post with videos from 5 iconic moments in John Lennon’s career. The videos include:

  1. Beatles’ First Appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show
  2. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
  3. “Imagine”
  4. “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”
  5. Last Full Concert Performance

To watch each video clip, you can click here to visit The Hollywood Reporter. Below, we’d like to share John Lennon’s last full-length concert performance. The clip features Lennon performing “Mother” at New York’s Madison Square Gardens in 1972.

Adults at Senior Care Residence Give Thanks

Nov25

Missy Buchanan – author, columnist, and blogger at “Reflections on Aging Well,” asked some folks at a senior care residence to share what they were most thankful for as Thanksgiving 2009 approached, other than their families. We appreciated their responses and hope you will too. Below are just a few of the residents’ responses. You can follow Missy on Twitter here: @MissyBuchanan

  • “I was very healthy until the last few years of my life.  I am thankful for that.  But now that my health has deteriorated, I am grateful for medications that help me to be more comfortable.”
  • “I am thankful for members of my church who visit me like clockwork every week.  A group of them bring the church van and even take me out to lunch sometimes.  Their visits are such a boost.  They will never know how much those visits mean to me.”
  • “I am thankful for my new friends here at the retirement village.  I came here knowing no one.  It was a scary time for me.  My husband had died.  I had sold my home.  I dreaded moving here, but some of the residents welcomed me as if they had known me forever.  I am so grateful for them.”
  • “Laughter!  I am thankful for people who make me laugh.  On days when I hurt, laughter keeps me going.”
  • “I am thankful for the colors of each season.”

Happy 70th Birthday, Paul Simon! Thanks for the memories…

Oct14

Paul Simon

Yesterday was Paul Simon’s 70th birthday. This may come as a shock to baby boomers who were moved by Simon’s lyrics as teenagers in the 1960s and thought they had reached “old age” by the time they’d turned 40. How could this legend be 70-years-old? Wasn’t he Still Crazy After All These Years back in 1975?

Paul Simon’s music, which continues to move generations, was a unique, calming influence when it first became popular amongst the baby boomer generation. The Vietnam War, the riots, and the assassinations of the Kennedy’s and Martin Luther King, Jr., all created a tumultuous environment that left teenagers both concerned and angry. But Simon’s lyrics gave this group something personal to connect with.

It wasn’t just Paul Simon who was great; Art Garfunkel was extremely talented as well, but when examining both artists, Simon was perhaps the force behind the two. Together they created a genre all their own. Their music wasn’t folk, but it wasn’t exactly rock either, (although that’s probably what it was considered.) Bridge Over Troubled Water could even be considered a bit of a rock-gospel song that continues to break barriers.

As time went on, Paul Simon created more upbeat, lighter songs like Julio Down By the Schoolyard, Kodachrome, and Cecelia. And we continue to love the artist he is today.

A few of us here at TV Ears had the honor of watching Simon perform at an AARP convention a few years ago and it was incredible because he still sounded so great! His songs will always bring back so many memories from a time period not-so-long ago, and that we say, “Happy 70th Birthday, Paul Simon!”

My Memory Of 9/11 – Tony Emma, VP of Sales And Marketing at TV Ears

Sep09

New York's Verranzano Narrows Bridge

On September 8, 2001 my wife and I were at our 30th high school reunion in Bellport, Long Island.  The turn out was great and everyone had a good time. I remember thinking how lucky we were to be a nation in no major conflicts as we had been 30 years before when we graduated in ’71, and that wasn’t it wonderful that my 15-year-old son would not have to face the prospect of going to war.

Leslie and I decided to leave a day early to get back to our home in Virginia and on September 10th started our drive home. As we crossed the Verranzano Narrows bridge, lower Manhattan gleamed like Oz in the picture perfect morning sun; thoughts of how, as a child, we once made this passage only by ferry pleasantly crossed my mind. Traveling south on Highway 95 we crossed through New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, crawling through Northern Virginia just miles from where the second attack on our nation would take place.

Tuesday morning I reluctantly prepared to go back to work after having had a great 10 days off. I was totally refreshed and thankful for the opportunity we’d had to re-acquaint ourselves with old friends and our hometown. At 8:45, I turned off CNN and headed into work, arriving at 9:15. My boss Larry met me at the door and suddenly, sadly, tragically, we weren’t in Kansas anymore.

Everyone here at TV Ears remembers 9/11 with melancholy sadness. The above story, written by Tony Emma, our Vice President of Sales and Marketing is particularly touching to us because although most of us were in California, Tony had recently visited New York to remember fondly his days growing up on Long Island.

Please take a moment, if you feel inclined, to share your story. We will never forget the people who died that day and are truly grateful to the many people hard at work to preserve their memory.

Why Diana Nyad is Swimming from Cuba to Key West

Aug08

Since becoming involved with the San Diego Senior Olympics, we at TV Ears have been inspired time and time again by boomers and seniors who are out there taking care of their bodies and enjoying life through exercise. When we heard Diana Nyad was attempting to swim from Cuba to Key West, we were extremely interested in her story and what motivated her to try this.

The story Nyad shares in the following video clip by Reader’s Digest may seem familiar – she was getting older and was overwhelmed by the idea that she might have lived her life without becoming the person she’d always wanted to be. How did she decide to combat this fear? By “dreaming of something almost impossible” and setting out to conquer it.
